Who is NARI?
As the voice of the remodeling industry, NARI has an inclusive, encompassing purpose: to establish and maintain a firm commitment to developing and sustaining programs that expand and unite the remodeling industry; to ensure the industry's growth and security; to encourage ethical conduct, sound business practices and professionalism in the remodeling industry; and to present  NARI as the recognized authority in the remodeling industry.  Members of NARI are full service contractors, design-build firms, manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, subcontractors, lenders and other related professionals who work in the remodeling field. NARI is committed to educating both trade professionals and remodeling-ready homeowners. NARI does this by reaching out to a diverse audience in a variety of formats including education, training, publications and programs.  For the last decade, NARI's Certification Program has been providing the remodeling industry with a formalized standard of expertise, knowledge, and ethical conduct among professional remodelers. The NARI Certification Program offers a measure of skill and expertise valued not only by other remodelers, but by consumers. Prized by those who have achieved the designation, certification programs identify remodelers who have undergone a detailed review and testing in areas of business management, ethical conduct, and technical skills.

To many professional remodelers, NARI Certification offers one of their most valuable marketing tools - assurance that the consumer is choosing a professional with years of experience, dedication to ongoing training, and a commitment to ethical conduct. NARI now has four distinct designations, "Certified Remodeler" (CR), "Certified Remodeler Specialist" (CRS), "Certified Remodeler Associate" (CRA) and "Certified Lead Carpenter" (CLC). With the remodeling industry now surpassing new home construction, being a member of NARI is more important than ever.

WHAT IS A CERTIFIED REMODELER?
The certification of a remodeling contractor under the certification program of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is the association's recognition that the contractor has met certain criteria for experience, commitment to ethical conduct and professionalism.  The designation is similar to the CKD acronym (Certified Kitchen Designer) and CLU (Certified Life Underwriter) in the insurance industry.
The individual who is certified has met various requirements:

  • Continuous full-time employment in the remodeling business for at least five years and currently employed by a firm that operates under the Code of Ethics adopted by NARI and their Certification Board.
  • Demonstrated the knowledge and ability required to perform the remodeling functions directly related to the particular certification class.  Showed competence in writing or directing the writing of job specifications in accordance with standards approved by the Certification Board and local codes.
  • Satisfactorily completed written examinations on the basics of general remodeling contracting or have had these examinations waived based on continuous experience.
  • Complied with all requests for documentation of experience and competence as well as adherence to NARI's Code of Ethics.
There are now four certification designations existing:
  • CR (Certified Remodeler)

  • CRS (Certified Remodeler Specialist)
  • CRA (Certified Remodeler Associate)
  • CLC (Certified Lead Carpenter)

All of the NARI Certifications require the same high standards of performance and go through the same testing procedure. Working with NARI Certified Remodelers is a guarantee of excellence. Only truly experienced and dedicated professionals are able to earn the distinction of calling themselves Certified Remodelers.
